August 7: Albion hunt for striker
by Andy Naylor
Albion remain firmly in the hunt for a target man, despite Alex Revell's goalscoring debut.
Revell briefly played the target role in the second half after curling Albion's winner at Rotherham on Saturday.
The former Braintree and Cambridge United marksman operated alone up front following Dean Cox's red card before being replaced by Colin Kazim-Richards.
Manager Mark McGhee said: "He's not that type of player, somebody who wants to play with his back to the main defender, although he did it well.
"We'll look at that but we don't really see him as that type. If we'd had the target man we need on Saturday we would maybe have won better."
McGhee has missed out on a succession of centre forwards, the latest being Hull's Ben Burgess.
He employed a three-man attack at Rotherham until the dismissal of left winger Cox for a second bookable offence just before half-time, Revell operating on the right and Gary Hart through the middle. "We watched Alex in that position for Braintree, so we knew he could play there," McGhee said.
"Colin is a slightly different type of player and we felt Alex would be better suited against their leftback.
"We felt Alex could get a lot of joy in the air, which he did. He is better in the air than Colin at this stage."
McGhee is now hoping for a good turnout and positive response from supporters to tomorrow night's opening home game against Gillingham, which Cox misses through suspension.
"To go to a place like Rotherham and win on the opening day is really a great result for us and we've got to capitalise on it.
"We've got to harness the energy and belief that is going to give us. There are a few doubters about our chances this season and one win is one win.
"But hopefully it gives a few of the punters a little bit of hope and will get them to turn out to give the lads the backing at home that the fans away from home gave us as usual."
